Justifiably concerned about wounding power with such a lightweight round (roughly half the weight of the NATO standard 62-gr 5.56x45mm cartridge), the bullet was designed with a steel penetrator tip with an aluminum base. If the 9mm pistol typically is on the order of 18″, that makes the overall penetration around DR 15 or so, giving an idea of it’s penetrative power after the AP is applied. It was designed to deal with the perception that body armor was going to be more prevalent on the modern battlefield (thus far, not terribly true), and that the somewhat ancient 9mm pistol did not have the killing power and effectiveness that was needed for such troops (that one’s certainly true).įN really attacked the penetration angle, designing a (relatively) high velocity round that featured a steel penetrator tip.The SS190 will penetrate about 9″ into ballistic gelatin after punching through a Level II vest, which is roughly DR 10 in GURPS. Now, don't get me wrong, BOTH are reloadable, it's just that 22TCM is A LOT easier. The 5.7x28mm SS190 cartridge was brought to market by FN-Herstal in 1993 (replacing the even lighter, plastic-core/penetrator tip SS90) in response to NATO’s search for a new kind of weapon for vehicle crews and behind-the-line combatants. 5.7 if I had to carry or use for survival, 22TCM for the fun of it. The only REAL shortcoming is lack of availability of "special" (read that lead-free, etc.) projectiles as easily available in 5.7. Just purchase & reload to your heart's content: No secret-sauce case coatings, no crushed/malformed cases on resizing, robust brass that you can make yourself from 5.56, you can re-use the brass more than just once with full-power charges, and not as sensitive to slight variations in powder charge as 5.7x28. Very reliable & useable right out-of-the-box. If you aren't as ambitious, just wait 'till their proprietary Tanfogliio derivatives (for defense) or 1911s (for range toy) chambered in 22TCM show-up. The whole thing shoots, but mine is still a work in progress. The recoil impulse is plenty strong to eject & feed the next cartridge, but the recoil spring supplied is too weak to fully chamber during a firing cycle (it's fine when hand-cycled) & I'm still messing with recoil spring options. If you choose to go this route, however, THIS IS NOT a project for the meek: technically this is using the 22TCM-9R, a shortened version of the same base cartridge to fit within Glock magazines. My most recent project is adapting their Glock 19 to 22TCM conversion kit: Got a $99 lower frame & a $130 complete slide (no barrel) from Palmettostatearmory, the conversion kit from Advancedtactical (barrel & recoils spring/guide), and I now have this flame-spewing dragon that looks like an innocent little G-19. But don't let that fool you: Because the operating pressures are lower than 5.7x28mm FN, the powder space more generous (& pressures less temperamental), the round is much more tolerant to handloading. Armscor (in its various iterations, like Rock Island) carries the only arms, as the cartridge is patented & non-SAAMI spec'ed. 22TCM: Easy-peasy to load for (VERY forgiving), brass from Advancedtactical or from your own cut-down 5.56x45mm NATO (or the commercial stuff) if you're concerned about future supplies.
